Urge Surfing Guided Meditation (RO-DBT)

Urge-Surfing meditation

Urges can feel surprisingly convincing. Fix it. Check it. Escape it. Tense against it. Make it stop.

Urge-surfing is an RO-DBT mindfulness practice that helps you notice an urge without automatically acting on it. Instead of suppressing the urge or trying to make it disappear, you practice observing how it rises, shifts, and changes while leaving yourself room to choose what happens next.

For people working with neuroplastic symptoms, this can be especially useful. Physical sensations are often followed almost instantly by urges to brace, monitor, avoid, investigate, or control. This practice helps create a little space between the sensation and the reaction, giving you an opportunity to respond with more curiosity, flexibility, and less automatic threat.

The goal is not to get rid of the urge. It is to discover that an urge is not an instruction.
